Remember Flappy Bird?

The mobile game developed by Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen has become a global phenomenon and was the most downloaded free game in the App Store for iOS at end January 2014. During this period, its developer said that Flappy Bird was earning $50,000 a day from in-app advertisements as well as sales.

He removed the game on February 10, 2014, due to guilt over what he considered to be its addictive nature and overuse but following the removal, many media outlets reported that several merchants on eBay were offering phones which had the app pre-installed. Some phones were listed for USD $1,499 or more, with some receiving bids of over $90,000. However, the listings were removed for violating eBay's rule stating that smartphones must be restored to factory settings before being sold. - Wikipedia

Another similar phenomenon is the Nintendo Classic Mini or NES Classic Edition that was first released on November 10, 2016 and with the limited supply, these initial shipments sold out almost immediately. Despite its success, Nintendo has decided to cease the production 5 months after its released due to overwhelming demand that they did not anticipate.

The NES Classic Edition's very limited stock during its original release in 2016 coupled with the extremely high demand, prompted internet scalpers to buy as many as they could, so they could resell them with extreme price markups. In the US, prices were commonly set between $200 and $500, compared to its launch price of $59.99. - Wikipedia
